Canada Disability Benefit
A new federal benefit providing $200/month to Canadians aged 18-64 with a disability and low income. First payments started July 2025.
Key Facts
- Amount: $200/month ($2,400/year)
- Eligibility age: 18-64
- Requirements: DTC approval + low income
- First payments: July 2025
- Back payments: Up to 24 months from application date
Provincial Treatment
Most provinces have exempted the CDB from provincial benefit calculations, meaning you keep the full $200 on top of your provincial benefits:
- Fully exempted: Ontario (ODSP, OW, ACSD), BC, NB, NL, NS, SK, MB, PEI, QC
- CRITICAL — Alberta claws back CDB: AISH recipients lose dollar-for-dollar. The full $200 is deducted from AISH.
How to Apply
- First, get DTC approval (the CDB requires it)
- Apply through CRA My Account or by phone
- CRA uses your tax return to determine income eligibility
Step 1: Get Your DTC
You can't get the CDB without DTC approval. If you haven't applied yet, that's where to start. See our DTC guide
